During the trip the students visit the Alamo to perform thier play. They will enjoy a brief and cram-packed time in San Antiono reflecting Texas heritage.

Humble Beginnings
The Electra sixth-grade class has an annual event .The class goes on a trip to Austin and San Antonio to perform as part of a celebration in honor of Texas Independence Day. It’s become an annual excursion for Dinsmore Elementary School. The Electra local teachers’ benefit is to raise money for scholarships. Dinsmore Principal Fran Davis thought her students could come up with something good for entertainment. Starting as a skit performed by the fourth class for teachers Benefit, but over the year evolved to what is known today as “The Lone Star Kids”. This year marked the ninth year in a row Electra students, who call themselves the “Lone Star Kids,” have been invited to perform their play, “Celebrate Texas” at the Lone Star State capital. The first performance was back in 2002 and the group performed in the Capitol Rotunda. The play, “Celebrate Texas” was inspired by the work of singer/songwriter/historian K.R. Wood, an Electra native. Wood is responsible for the “Fathers of Texas” series of CDs, which chronicles the rich history of the Lone Star State through words and songs. “We took his music and some of his scripting and we wrote a play and then we put it on,” Bigbie said. The following year, Wood asked the group of students, who were now in the fifth grade, to perform the play again at the benefit so that he could get a good video of the performance. He uses the performance at teacher workshops and other speeches he gives. The video made its way into the hands of people planning the annual Texas Independence Day celebration in Austin, and the Electra students, who were then in the sixth grade, were invited to come be a part of the celebration in 2002. It’s been a school tradition ever since. Kids start learning the songs in the fourth grade some. Students know that their conduct and grades have to be passing before getting to make the trip. Practice goes on for about six weeks, and after that, the students know their Texas history and songs. The children have enjoyed sharing their knowledge while they’re touring historic Texas sites during their trips. When we were touring the Texas State Cemetery, the tour guide would ask them questions, like ‘Do you know who Stephen F. Austin is and why he is important?’ and students will sometimes would sing lyrics of the songs learned. The six graders go and tour the State Capitol building as well.
